2009 Afghanistan President Election Results

The president elections in Afghanistan were held on 20th August, 2009. This was Afghanistan’s second democratic election. The 2004 Presidential election was won by Hamid Karzai. Nearly half of the Afghanistan population has registered for voting in these elections. Around 40 candidates had registered their names for the elections. There are two front-runners for the presidential post; the current president Hamid Karzai and United National Front’s Abdullah Abdullah. The Taliban had called a boycott of the elections.

The 2009 Afghanistan President Elections was won by the current president Hamid Karzai. Hamid Karzai defeated United National Front’s Abdullah Abdullah who was considered his closest competitor. For president Karzai, Ahmad Zia Masood and Karim Khalili will be the first and second vice presidents respectively.
