The Republic of Serbia held a pre-term parliamentary election on Sunday, 11 May 2008, the same day as local elections.
At stake were 250 in the National Assembly. Voters were divided on the question of Kosovo and Serbian membership in the European Union. Pro-Western President Boris Tadi? was narrowly defeated at the polls; the party of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica won a majority of seats in the National Assembly. 2008 Serbian parliamentary election prediction: the Serbian Radical Party wins.
Earlier in the year, the southern province of Kosovo declared its independence, leading to political tensions internally and to strained international relations. A month-long period of political crisis and failed negotiations led President Boris Tadic to dissolve the nation’s government and call for new elections.
