The Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator located just outside Geneva, Switzerland, commenced operation in early July 2008; in September, scientists and engineers began nudging the collider’s two hadron beams to crash into each other.

The work of an international team of scientists and engineers, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) crosses the border between France and Switzerland. Teams of specialists had been testing and preparing the equipment for the past several months. Science prediction: the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will launch in July 2008 and begin hadron collisions in September 2008.

The device was labeled a Doomsday machine in a lawsuit filed in US District Court in Hawaii. The unsuccessful suit sought to delay the launch of the Large Hadron Collider until further tests could be completed.

CERN (the European Council for Nuclear Research) hosted Open Days on 5 and 6 April 2008, inviting visitors to learn more about the Large Haldron Collider. Guests were able to check out the many precisely designed and fitted components, visit with engineers, and peer into the LHC’s descent pit.

So it be? Maybe . . .
