2008 Iceland Presidential Election Cancelled
Iceland cancelled its presidential election, originally scheduled to be held on Thursday, 26 June 2008 throughout the country.
Earlier in the year, incumbent president Olaf Ragnar Grimsson announced he would stand for another term; in keeping with tradition, no other candidates stepped up to contest the office. Iceland presidential election prediction: Olaf Ragnar Grimsson is the president of Iceland in 2008.
No candidates filed to run against President Grimsson by the deadline date, 24 May 2008. It is customary in Iceland that, when a standing president announces he wishes to retain his office, that potential presidential candidates will not challenge him.
Most political decisions are made by the Prime Minister, making the office of President largely ceremonial.
So it be? Maybe . . .
